Skarps' Birthday
OK, these pictures are almost two weeks behind. I know, I'm sorry. What can I say, work has taken over my life recently. But I figured I'd better try and catch up. My memory sticks are starting to fill up.

So, two weeks ago, just before entering crunch, we spent a lovely weekend away in Maine to celebrate Skarps' 30th. Being an avid gamer, what better way to celebrate than to invite 12 of your closest friends up to a cabin in Maine so you can all shut yourselves in and play games all weekend? Actually, the weather was too chilly to really enjoy the outdoors anyway, not that we let it stop us too much. The scenery was beautiful, but nobody was willing to try and go for a dip in the lake.

I took the opportunity to run a couple games using the Savage Worlds rules. I guess I won't expound on that too much now -- I'll save it for another post. Suffice it to say that I think it's a pretty good system, though the hype around it is a bit overblown. I'll probably try to play a few more games of it in the future before really deciding how useful it is.

On Saturday night we had a reading from the book of Lovecraft, but candle and fire light. It started out pretty cool, and I enjoyed the mood setting for the subsequent games of Cthulu, but sadly the story chosen ran over two hours long. That's more out-loud reading than I can take in one sitting.

It has sort of instilled in me a new interest in horror genre roleplaying though. I ran a Cthulu style game (using Savage Worlds) that night, and then I played in another one just last night (using the Window rules) that Skarps ran for us. It's pretty neat, and I'm kind of curious about trying to run some more. I can only really see running them as one-shots though, I wouldn't want to play or run a campaign of it.

Well, that's probably enough rambling from me for now. Enjoy the pictures.
